IV Conscious Sedation

Deeply relaxed, safely monitored, and finished before you know it. For patients who feel anxious, need longer treatment, or simply want their visit to feel like it never happened.

What IV sedation is

Intravenous conscious sedation delivers a sedative directly into your bloodstream through a small line in your arm or hand. It takes effect within minutes and can be adjusted precisely throughout the appointment, which is why it is the most reliable form of sedation dentistry.

You stay conscious in the medical sense, breathing on your own and able to respond, but you feel calm, drowsy and pleasantly indifferent to what is happening. Combined with local anesthetic, you should feel no pain, and most patients remember little of the visit at all.

Your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen level are monitored continuously, and a member of our team stays with you from the moment the line goes in until you are ready to go home.

Who it helps most

01

Dental anxiety or a past bad experience

If the thought of the chair makes your heart race, or an appointment years ago still bothers you, IV sedation lets you get the care you have been putting off without the dread. Most patients remember little or nothing of the visit.

02

Long or complex treatment in one visit

Implants, All on 4, multiple extractions, or full-mouth work can take hours. Under IV sedation the time passes without you noticing, so we can complete in a single appointment what might otherwise take several.

03

A strong gag reflex or trouble getting numb

Sedation quiets the gag reflex and makes local anesthetic work better, which helps patients who have struggled with impressions, x-rays or getting fully numb in the past.

04

Medical or special needs

Patients with certain movement disorders, sensory sensitivities or conditions that make it hard to sit still for long can be treated safely and comfortably with sedation, after a careful medical review.

What your visit looks like

Four steps, and the middle two are the ones you will barely remember.

01

Consult and medical review

Dr. Giron reviews your health history, medications and treatment plan, explains your options and confirms that IV sedation is right for you. You leave with written preparation instructions.

02

Arrival and settling in

You arrive with your escort, we check your vitals, and place a small IV line. Within a few minutes you feel the calm set in. Local anesthetic is given once you are relaxed, so you will not feel the injections.

03

Treatment

We complete your dental work while you rest, monitored the entire time. Long procedures feel like minutes. The sedation is adjusted as needed, and it can be lightened or deepened at any point.

04

Recovery and home

You rest in our recovery area until you are alert, then your escort takes you home. We call to check on you, and you have a direct number for any questions that evening.

Questions patients ask

Will I be asleep?

Not fully. IV conscious sedation puts you in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state, sometimes called twilight sleep. You can still breathe on your own and respond to simple instructions, but you will feel calm and detached, and most patients have little or no memory of the procedure afterward.

Is IV sedation safe?

Yes, when it is administered by a trained provider and you are continuously monitored. Before your appointment we review your full medical history and medications. During treatment your heart rate, oxygen level and blood pressure are monitored the entire time, and the level of sedation is adjusted moment to moment.

How do I prepare?

You will receive written instructions at your consult. In general: no food or drink for several hours before the appointment, take only the medications we approve, wear comfortable clothing with short sleeves, and arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the rest of the day.

How long does it take to recover?

You will rest in our office until you are alert enough to leave with your escort, usually within an hour. Plan on taking it easy for the rest of the day. Most patients feel back to normal by the next morning.

Is it covered by insurance?

Some dental and medical plans cover sedation for specific procedures; many treat it as an elective add-on. We will check your benefits and give you a clear quote before you decide.
